About the piece
Our experiences are not only formed by what happens to us but also what is happening inside of us and so we can be in the same situation at a same time but depending on what is happening in our lives we will have a different emotional response.
Martin has painted this two-part artwork as an introspection after being laid off along with many of his coworkers from a company that has gone through multiple layoffs before - big and small.
Martin delves deep into his own feelings of relief and compares them with those of others that might have wanted to stay, those that have to see more of their favourite colleagues leave, and those that would have probably liked to be laid off as well but weren’t.
Martin’s method of imprinting a second painting onto the canvas, resulting in his captivating multi-part pieces came from him meditating on how people’s opinions and minds about something are formed not just based on their own experience but also on how others look at things and how that rubs off on you.
